The rapid transformation of the Indian agriculture industry

Agriculture is the backbone of our nation. Since years, the farming community and agriculture have contributed majorly to the Indian economy. Majority of rural India is engaged in agriculture and farming. From cash crops to food crops, the Indian farmer is knowledgeable in all types of crops.

The technological advances in the recent years have also impacted agriculture positively. These technologies have benefitted farmers immensely by revolutinising the way they produce and sell their agricultural products. Let us look at how technology and research and development are helping farmers throughout the country.

transformation of the Indian agriculture industry

Economic support to farmers

Farmers are reeling under crippling debt. Recognizing their problem, the government has taken various initiatives to reduce their debt. This helps farmers focus on their primary activity, agriculture. From debt forgiveness to loan schemes and tax-free agriculture income, there are various benefits that farmers can get. Not just that, government officials are actively trying to inform the agriculture community of about various schemes.

Use of technology

The farming community is slowly becoming tech-savvy. Smartphone usage has increased considerably among the rural communities. It has enabled farmers to be more aware of how to use technology for better farming practices and  helped them get in touch with various supporting organizations across the country. From opening a bank account to checking the weather, farmers have become more efficient in sowing, ploughing, planting and harvesting crops.

Better platform for selling agriculture products

India is a country of 1.2 billion. The population will continue to increase and so will the demand for food. Keeping an entire country fed is no small task. Farmers are increasingly becoming more aware of the current market trends and price their products accordingly. Whether it is fruits, vegetables or grains, farmers are now equipped with enough knowledge to price their products fairly.

Improved agriculture methods

With global warming affecting every industry, agriculture and farming have not been spared. Drought is a common problem for Indian farmers. However, farmers are increasingly adopting new methods of irrigation, such as drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting. They are using new techniques to ensure higher crop yields. Farmers are also decreasing the use of pesticides and insecticides, and increasing the use of organic manure to fertilise the soil. The end result is an abundant crop, which is free of chemicals and the farmers are economically better.

Looking at the agriculture industry in India, it is easy to say that there is a lot of scope for the younger generation. Agriculture is not just about farming anymore. It is about researching new ways to help farmers get a better yield from their crops. It is about research and development of new crop varieties to ensure that the end product is high in quality and safe for the population to consume.
