How will Artificial Intelligence affect jobs in the future?

Today’s college students often wonder if the degree they are studying for will remain relevant in the next ten years. While looking at their future prospects, an integral question they should be able to answer is whether their skills will be important and relevant in the near future. This is because technological inventions are having an impact on the way we work, and artificial intelligence is the future, as every new discovery points towards that.

So, what can a student do to ensure that his skills are sought after while still in college? Well, it is important to understand what AI is, what it does for us currently, and what it is posited to do in the future. Here is a look at how artificial intelligence could possibly affect the job market in the future:

Will downsizing happen?

Downsizing essentially means cutting down on the workforce and not eliminating it completely. Downsizing has been a part of every business and industry, and the trend will continue, this will keep happening as companies keep incorporating technology into their processes. Instead of worrying about downsizing in the future, the better option is to think about how you can make yourself an indispensable part of your company.

Importance of unique skill sets

Tasks that need no skill or minimal amount of skills are more than likely to be taken over by AI, thus it has become important now, more than ever, to recognize and master a unique skill set. Tasks that are monotonous and do not require special skills, are cheaper when completed by a machine than human labour. Therefore, it is important for today’s students to figure out how they can stand out from the crowd and be different. This also means constantly learning new things, evolving, and teaching yourself new skills.

Reorganization vs. elimination

Artificial intelligence being introduced into company processes will mean reorganization as opposed to elimination. This is where the management of any company needs to come together to learn and organize AI and human labour together and create the best possible business practices for the company. Thus, the students need to be constantly ready to adapt to the changes in their environment.

Creating new business processes

Everyone is scared of losing their jobs, but what they should really be talking about is how to reorganize and recreate business processes to incorporate AI into their business functions. Adaptability in the workplace will be one of the most sought-after skills in the future. Just because AI will become a part of the workforce does not necessarily mean that people won’t be required to do certain tasks. If anything, using AI will be able to complement a worker’s tasks. This will increase the quality of the person’s work and help him become more efficient.

Inherently human skills

What sets us apart from machines and technology is humanity. There are certain tasks and jobs with an inherent human element that cannot be taken away or replicated by a machine. Research studies show that any job that involves crunching a large amount of data or numbers is likely to be impacted by AI. However, jobs that require any sort of judgment, empathy or an aspect of humanity in its decision making will be the least impacted. Archaeologists, massage therapists, and scientists will probably have minimal impact on their work.

What can a student about to enter the workforce do?

We advise you to keep yourself constantly updated about the technological innovations in your field. You can do this by subscribing to trade journals or reading the news and research articles about your areas of interest. While interviewing for jobs, we would advise students to ask about the company’s long-term plans. In this changing landscape, one of the questions to ask your potential employer is what part will technology play in their company in the future. If the company is heavily invested in the technology industry, you could also ask how AI will impact jobs and business processes in the future. A good company will know the answers to these questions which can help you decide the right workplace for yourself.

The need of the hour is not to shun Artificial Intelligence but to work together and see how AI can complement human intelligence. It is an undeniable fact that AI will become an integral part of the workforce and change the way humans work across all platforms. So, while we have a clear picture of the future, why not embrace it? Know what is happening in the tech industry because that is the only way you will know how to deal with the obstacles that come your way.

Microwave recipes for the always-hungry college student!

College life! There is nothing quite like it-bunking classes with your friends, long-nights at the library before the exam, an endless string of parties and the campus food. When you’re running low on the cash supply from home and feel bored of the food in the college canteen- midnight hunger pangs are a big problem!

College can be stressful, don’t let your meals be a part of that stress. Taking care of your nutrition and proper diet along with studies is extremely important. So, give your packet of Maggi noodles a break and let’s talk about some recipes which will give you a respite from the monotony!

1) Baked Potatoes- One of the easiest and tummy-filling recipes.

Rub the potatoes with oil, sprinkle them with salt and pepper, and prick them with a fork. Place all the potatoes on a microwave-safe dish and microwave at full power for five minutes. Turn them over and microwave for another three to five minutes. Sprinkle with cheese and chilli flakes and voila!

2)  Microwave Fried Egg- For when you need some protein intake.

Swirl some oil around in a bowl. Crack the egg into the bowl and break the yolk (you can also add a little salt, pepper, tomato sauce at this step). Cover with a kitchen paper towel. (It is very important to break the yolk and cover it as eggs will pop like a balloon when microwaved). Place in the microwave oven on full power for 1 minute. Stand for 1 minute to allow the microwave fried egg to settle down a bit. Enjoy with a buttered toast.

3) Masala Pulao- For that home cooked flavour!

Soak rice in water for at least fifteen minutes. Chop your favourite vegetables and keep basic spices and herbs like salt, cumin powder, red chilli powder and some garam masala ready. Mix all the ingredients in a microwave- safe bowl and add some water, lastly add some butter/ghee. Place in the microwave for 15-18 minutes and your masala rice is ready!

4) Pasta in a mug- For the junk food craving.

Take a coffee mug, add half cup macaroni and half cup water, add a pinch of salt and place in the microwave for 1 minute. Take out the mug and stir properly, place the mug back into the microwave for 1 minute till the water starts to boil. Now add 1 tablespoon pasta sauce, chilli flakes, oregano and 3 tablespoons of milk. You can also some cheese (optional). Mix everything and place in the microwave for 1 minute. Enjoy your hot and tasty red sauce pasta!

Another important tip is to keep your fridge stocked with milk and cereals for a quick breakfast. Also, for proper nutrition and fibre, try eating seasonal fruits as often as you can.

Remember, microwave cooking is all about improvising and using whatever ingredients you have around you. Don’t stress if you don’t have particular spices or vegetables, just use your creativity and play around!

How can parental involvement enrich a student’s college experience?

As children grow up, they want more independence and authority to make their own decisions. But, it is important to remember that parental involvement in a child’s life can make all the difference in their future. Studies have shown that parental involvement in school led to better outcomes for the students. Not just school, college-going students can also benefit greatly when they have the support of their parents. From sharing academic troubles to their social lives, children can have a great support system in their parents. The key here is to be open to communication.

Here is how parental involvement can greatly enrich a student’s college experience.

Motivation

Parents are our biggest motivators. They might scold, yell or tell us to do certain things in a certain way. However, the fact remains that they are our biggest motivators. They know our strengths and weaknesses and can offer valuable advice on how to play on both. What seemed easy in school can seem extremely difficult in the college. You might have known your school classmates and teachers for a decade, but college is a different game altogether. Students experience everything from adjustment issues in class to establishing a social life outside the class. Let your parents motivate you!

Right advice

The advice from your father or mother might seem harsh. But, it will always be the right kind of advice. There is no one in the world who wants to see you succeed more than your parents. Even though their advice might not seem fair or you might think they don’t understand, but they do. They also have been to a college and experienced the college life. Though the college life ten years ago and right now is different, but there are some pieces of advice that seem evergreen. Harsh or easy, parental advice is one thing we all need in our lives at every stage.

Advice for career

The moment you get into college, you need to start planning your future and your career. The earlier you start, the better prepared you are. When your parents are involved in your plans for your future, everything seems doable and real life does not seem scary. Parents support their children in the choices they make. Whether you think those choices are right or not is secondary. But when they support you in career choices, it’s a great boost to your confidence. Parental involvement also helps keep children realistic about how the future might pan out. Not just that, parents can help children understand what an office life looks like in reality.

Keep up with coursework

School or college, we all have the habit of falling a bit behind in our studies. We tend to procrastinate and leave studying until the last minute. However, school coursework and college coursework are a world apart. School coursework will seem easy when you compare it to your college courses. So, when your parents know what classes you are taking, they can help you stay focused. Sometimes, you may be lazy and a phone call from your mother or father may just be the push you need to finish your homework or study for a test.

Aware of what is happening

College life is stressful and we are not talking only about academics. A new environment, a new setting, new people and a new beginning can all seem extremely overwhelming at the same time. It is important to have someone to talk to. When parents are open with their kids and don’t pass judgment on every decision, children are more willing to share their troubles with their parents. It is up to the parents to make sure they know what is going on in their child’s lives. Children on college campuses which are especially far away from home might suffer from depression or other mental health problems. When they know they can call a parent, life seems just a tad bit simpler.

Better chances of graduation

Research studies have shown that students who have parental involvement have a better chance of graduating from school and college. Parents provide the much-needed boost of confidence, emotional support and other types of support any child requires when they go off to the college on their own. College is a scary experience and most children don’t want to admit they need a little handholding. However, when the parent is involved in their day-to-day activities, even if it is just via phone, navigating college becomes easier.

Parental involvement in a college student’s life is a valuable resource for children, even if they might not think so or might not say it out. When children grow up and go off to a college, they want to be set free, they want their independence and freedom and whatnot. But, it is always great for them to know they have a safety net in their parents. Be involved, ask questions, and make sure they know that you are always there for them. Eventually, they will start sharing and life will be easier for both the parents and the children.

It has been proven time and again that parental involvement can enrich a child’s college experience greatly and play an important part in their success. For all the parents out there who want to make sure their child succeeds, get involved; your child needs you, whether they know it or not.
