Resources you can use in your college to get better placement

Students often under use the resources available to them in their college. Most universities in India have a placement cell, but do students use the facilities available to them? From the library to the campus gardens, from reading rooms to the placement center, students often make minimal use of these resources, which are actually available to them for free. But if you want your first step in the corporate world to be meaningful, then you need to find the right job. And for that, you need to use the resources available in your college for career guidance and placement. Here is how to make the most of the resources available in your college in order to jump-start your corporate career.

Jumpstart your corporate career with the resources in your college

Industrial projects and visits

Industrial projects and visits are a huge part of college life, especially for those in the engineering and technical fields. Make sure you are a part of these industrial visits. This is a good chance to interact with industry insiders. Industrial projects are also a great way to showcase your knowledge and experience. Corporate companies want the crème de la crème of the current generation, so they are likely to invite students from reputed colleges for such visits.

Talk to your placement officer

Placement cells have placement officers. These might be your peers or your faculty. Be sure to talk to them about the resources available to you. When you know what help you can get, you are more likely to approach them for it. They can also brief you about the workshops being held in the university to prepare students for the placement interviews. Shed your shy mantel, because this is the time to be bold and take responsibility for your future.

Network with alumni

Networking with alumni is also a great way to form connections. Alumni meets organized by universities offers the perfect occasion to chat with a few alumni who are in the same field as you. LinkedIn is also a great tool to connect with Alumni from your college and school. Do not hesitate to reach out to them. Most alumni are more than happy to help students from their alma mater. Alumni might also be able to point you in the right direction based on their experience.

Network with industry experts

If you have been on multiple industrial visits, then you might be in touch with those who led these visits and answered your questions. Reconnect with them before or during your placement interviews in order to see if they have an open position for you. Even if they don’t have any potential job opportunities, it is good to stay in touch with people from the industry. People from the industry also give you the right advice to advance your career.

Attend company info sessions

A lot of companies visit campuses across the country to conduct information sessions. These information sessions are a great way to introduce students to the company and talk to them about company culture. These info sessions might sound boring, but in reality, they ate incredibly helpful in helping you determine if the company is a good fit for you or not. Many companies accept resumes at such events or talk about potential job openings. So, these sessions could prove to be just what you need.

Give mock interviews

Prepare for your placement interviews with the same zeal you would use to prepare for your semester exams. Practice answering questions; give mock interviews, practice speaking in front of the mirror. These tactics will help you gain more confidence while communicating your thoughts to the interviewer. Practice with friends, family or your placement counselor. You could also ask a faculty member to help you with the prep.

Research your potential companies

As a lot of experienced people will tell you, an interview is not a grilling. In fact, it is far from a grilling. Interviews are a medium through which both the employer and the employee get to know each other. It is always a good idea to read up on the company you are planning to interview with. Prepare a list of questions, because this shows that you have done your research. Don’t be afraid to ask about their vision, mission, their current projects, and their company culture. You are allowed to get to know your potential employer just as they are allowed to ask you questions.

Resume and editing services

If your college has a placement cell, they will definitely have resume writing and editing services. If your college does offer such services, we would advise you to take full benefit of these services. Your resume is a single piece of paper, but it contains all the necessary information an interviewer needs to know about you. Therefore, make sure your resume is professional and edited by a professional. Your first impression should be long-lasting.

Take the lead

Take the lead in projects, assignments, in workshops, and during industrial visits. For starters, it looks good on your resume. And secondly, it is a good way to show potential employers that you are willing to take on responsibility and lead the charge if necessary. It also shows proactiveness, which is a skill admired by every single employer and recruiter in the market.

Prepare for the interview

Prepare for your interview the way you would prepare for your exam. Make notes, create flashcards for important information, practice your answers, write them down and edit them, and make sure you are coherent. At least 50% of the interview is predictable. They will ask you to talk about your education, experience, skills, strengths, and weaknesses. There is no reason why you shouldn’t prepare for these commonly asked questions. The more prepared you are, the clearer your communication will be during the interview.

You should not be hesitant to use resources in your college. Every student has the right to avail such services. These have been put in place by the administration for the student body. Placement cells, placement departments or placement counselors play a much more vital role in helping you find a job than you might think. They have the knowledge and the connections to guide you onto the right career path. While you celebrate the end of your academic life, you should also celebrate the beginning of your corporate career.

How to elevate your LinkedIn profile?

How to elevate your LinkedIn profile?

LinkedIn is an all-important tool for the students these days. It is a medium to look for jobs and opportunities and create a public resume. Therefore, just creating a LinkedIn profile with basic information is not enough. How do you make your profile stand out? How do you make it different so it catches the attention of recruiters and other professionals?

Find your answers right here. Here is how a few tweaks and additions can help you elevate your LinkedIn profile.

Professional headshot

A picture speaks a thousand words. A picture in formal attire will make a great first impression on anyone who looks at your LinkedIn profile. Invest in this one picture and you see it was worth it.

Ask for recommendations

Ask for recommendations from your co-workers, managers, and teachers. Recommendations are a way to showcase your skills from an external and objective source. A high number of recommendations mean many people vouch for you professionally, which is great. In this way, people who visit your profile can see how good you are at your skills.

Add a summary

Always add a short summary to convey what you are looking for, what skills you have and why you’re good at what you do. You might need a few drafts to get the perfect summary.

Highlight skills with endorsements

Endorsements from your LinkedIn collections are a great way to showcase your skills. Put the skills relevant to your profession on the top. Endorsements for generic skills such as Microsoft Office, Photoshop, etc. hold little weight.

Use a custom URL

Students are not aware that they can create a custom URL for their LinkedIn profile. This URL makes it easy for people to find you. Make sure your custom URL is professional and uses your names, and not nicknames.

Highlight your projects

For students, thesis projects, industrial projects, research projects and other projects are an important part of the curriculum. It is a great idea to add your projects in this section. You can add information, documents, images, and even other team members.

Mention special awards and certifications

Did you do a special course on coding? Did you give a specific exam in your field? Mention all your awards and certifications even if they are non-academic. This section is a good way to show your extracurricular activities, academic activities, and other interests.

Follow relevant groups

Lastly, follow relevant groups and personalities from your industry. This will show visitors what you are interested in. LinkedIn groups are a good source of information about the trends in your industry and new employment opportunities. Don’t be afraid to interact with other members of the group.

LinkedIn is a powerful tool if harnessed properly. It is essential for you, as a student, to make the most of it. It can be an incredibly helpful medium to learn new things and find a job you love.

The right questions to ask and the right answers to give your interviewer

Contrary to the popular belief, an interview is not a one-way conversation. It is a conversation between the interviewer and the interviewee. Confused? Allow us to explain. Most people believe that an interview is where a potential employer checks whether you have the necessary skills or not. However, they don’t realize that it is also an opportunity for the candidate to know the company or their potential employer. It is the only opportunity a candidate has to see if the company is the right fit for him.

Now, let us talk about how to answer the interview questions and what questions should you ask your interviewer. Your attire, body language, and preparation will determine how the interview will go.

Can a job interview be beneficial to both parties?

Answering the questions

The primary task of the candidate is to answer the questions. These points will help you prepare yourself for all kinds of questions in the interview.

Confidence

Always answer the interview questions with confidence. Being confident sends the message that you know what you are talking about. This is exactly the kind of impression you want to give your potential employer.

Know about the company

We cannot emphasize this enough. Do your research about the company. They might ask your opinion on an ongoing issue, project or client. It’s good to read on the latest happenings in your industry. It is also important to know the skills required for a particular job profile. This will help showcase your skills in a way that fits your employer’s expectations.

Your strengths and weaknesses

This question is thrown at most candidates. They might not ask directly, but in various other forms. Be prepared with your answer so you know what to say. You don’t want to become blank during the interview.

Think before you answer

Always think before you answer. If you need to pause and collect your thoughts before answering, do it. Taking a pause before answering is advisable since you do not want to just blurt out what comes to your mind. You are there to make a good impression, so your answers should reflect that and why you are a good fit for the company.

Experience and skills

Your experience and skills are an important part of your application. Often, you will be asked “What skills can you bring to this position?” “Why should [company] hire you?” and “What are your professional strengths?” You should know which skills are required for which position and emphasize on those specific skills during the interview.

Asking the questions

Listed below are some of the topics you can talk about during your interview. Remember, it’s perfectly ok to ask questions and it will not reflect badly or interfere with the interview process.

The hiring process

As a potential candidate, your first thought is to make sure that the interview goes as well as possible. Regardless of how it goes, you should ask about the next step in the hiring process. “Will there be an in-person interview?” “Will there be a telephone interview?” It is always better to be prepared ahead of time.

Company culture

As a potential employee, you should ask about the company’s culture. “Do they have regular social outings and events for employees?” Your interviewer is the best person to answer this question. Ask the question in a way that shows you are curious and excited to learn more about the company’s internal culture.

Company success

Just as interviewers ask about the candidate’s past successes and failures, so can you. You can ask how the company measures success and how do they go about achieving the standards of success set by them. It’s also good to ask about the company’s appraisal process and how they measure an employee’s success.

Future plans

One of the most recommended questions to ask your interviewer is where does the company see itself in the next 5 years. The answer will help you determine if and how you can contribute to the company’s future vision and mission.

Access to resources

As a new employee, you need someone to show you the ropes. A guide is always helpful in acclimatizing to a new workplace. Therefore, you can ask if you will have access to a mentor when you begin working there. If there is a mentor program in place you already know about, ask about the workings of the company.

Biggest/ latest project

If you do your research before the interview, you will be aware of the company’s current projects or clients. You can ask questions about the project including the goals, the process, its importance for the company, etc. Even if you don’t get a direct answer, it will give you an insight into their working style.

An interview is a conversation between two people and not an interrogation by any means. This misconception often stops candidates from getting to know more about the company. They prepare themselves for the interview but often ignore about preparing themselves to ask questions about the company. Just as it is important for a company to see if the candidate is a right fit for the organization, it is also important for the candidate to check if the company is the right fit for him.

No matter what happens in the interview, always follow-up with a thank you note or a thank you email. Such a gesture will help people remember you. You never know, they might refer you for the next job opening in the company or you might be on your way towards establishing yourself as a model employee.

The prestige of joining the National Cadet Corps

Extracurricular activities are the focal point for students in schools and colleges. They not only look good on a student’s record, but also help students explore new hobbies and passions. The NCC or the National Cadet Corps is a prestigious organization with a presence in schools and colleges all over India. So what exactly is the NCC?

The NCC is a youth organization. It came into existence a year after independence, in 1948. Students can voluntarily join this organization within their school and college. However, they should know that the NCC is not equivalent to the army. This organization is geared primarily towards youth development. It aims to teach students the life skills, the importance of unity, and other important ethics and values. It remodels a cadet’s personality and turns him into a law-abiding citizen s of our country.

The NCC regimen is built to inculcate the importance of discipline in students from the beginning. NCC cadets go on to join the defense forces, including the army, navy, and air force. However, it is not mandatory to do so. The NCC does not, in any way, pressurize students to join the armed forces; it’s entirely the student’s choice.

So, what is it about the organization that makes it so important for students to be a part of? Why do students who have already been a part of NCC in their school and college days recommend others to participate?  Read on to see our take on it.

The prestige of joining the National Cadet Corps

Start early

To get a feel of what the NCC is, join your school or college’s, division. This is the first step towards becoming a cadet. Joining early means you have an extracurricular activity that is extremely beneficial for you. Not only that, NCC training keeps you fit and helps you to focus. Don’t know who to ask or where to start? Ask the sports department in your school or college for the right guidance.

Know your strengths

The NCC is an organization that will show you what your strengths and weaknesses are. Your leader will teach you how to hone your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Schools and colleges are usually equipped with big grounds suitable for NCC training. NCC exercises and camps are a great way to know what your limitations are. Schools often arrange for exchange programs for NCC cadets to experience and train with fellow NCC cadets from other regions of the country.

Build life skills

First and foremost, NCC cadets are taught about the motto of the organization,“Unity and Discipline”. Cadets are taught how to read maps to help them navigate when outdoors. In the times of GPS, this is a forgotten skill but is handy when technology fails you. Students are taught the basics of first aid as well, including an explanation of human physiology. In times of crisis, the knowledge of first aid can be a lifesaver. Building of strength and physical stamina is another aspect of NCC training.

As students become more involved with NCC, they are taught parachuting, paragliding as well as certain aviation skills. For students who go on to join the defense forces, this training offers them an edge over other candidates. Cadets are given extensive self-defense training as well, which is an important skill to possess right now.

Besides, students are given basic knowledge of Ayurveda and Yoga, both extremely important fields of study in India. NCC instills in you a love for your and teaches about the contribution of armed forces to the country’s defense and growth.

Global exposure

Students get to travel all over India for training camps. NCC students who perform well in their school and college units are also given the opportunity to participate in the Republic Day parade. They first attend a camp in New Delhi to undergo training before this important parade. Occasionally, NCC cadets are allowed to participate in exchange programs between India and other countries, where students from both the countries get an opportunity to learn about each other’s culture. Such experiences are necessary to broaden your horizons and instill respect for cultures different than yours.

Career opportunities

NCC cadets are trained so well that they definitely have an advantage when applying for the defense forces. Students can train to get the A, B or C level certificates. C-level certificate holders have the maximum advantage. About 32 seats are reserved for C-level NCC cadets in the Indian Military Academy, as long as they clear other criteria. The Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force offer opportunities to NCC C-level certificate holders under the Short Service Commission that lasts for 5 years. Reliance Industries also offers employment opportunities for C-level certificate holders under the job title of Technical Security Officer. Many state and central government jobs are reserved for C-level certificate holders.

Joining NCC can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your student life. The organization instills a spirit of dedication and service towards the country. It is an enriching experience to meet students from all over the country. It teaches students to respect one another and stay united despite coming from diverse backgrounds. NCC cadets also take part in social projects to help their local communities. Students learn important skills that can save their lives in dire situations. This is an opportunity students should not miss out on. It is an integral part of their school and college experience. When schools are equipped to offer proper training, students are the biggest beneficiaries.

Whether a candidate goes on to join the armed forces or not, NCC is one of the best experiences of their lives.

6 Interview Tips to impress your Potential Employer

You have landed your first interview, so congratulations. You have an updated resume, the time and day for the interview are set, and you are a bundle of nerves. Fear not, because we are here to help you get through the tricky process of acing an in-person interview. These tried and tested tips might be just the push you need. Remember, nothing good comes easy.

6 Interview Tips to impress your Potential Employer

  1. Punctuality is Important

First impressions are important. Arriving 5-10 minutes before the time given to you is a great way to show your potential employer that you value their time. Punctuality is a virtue that is highly coveted in employees. If you live far, make sure you plan your route ahead of time. It is always better to reach half an hour before the interview than half an hour after the interview.

  1. Dress for the Role

Your attire is more important than you think it is. That is what your interviewers will see the moment you walk into the room. If you dress in a jeans and t-shirt for an interview at an MNC, you are effectively saying that you don’t respect their work culture. The safest bet is to pick a formal outfit to come across as professional.

  1. Do Not Fidget

Your body language says a lot about your state of mind. Don’t play with your thumbs or your hair while answering questions. If you are someone who fidgets a lot, practice before your interview. Your posture and eye contact while answering questions should reflect confidence.

  1. Take a Pause

Most students ignore this piece of advice. But it is perfectly acceptable to take a pause before answering your questions. Take a few seconds to formulate your answer and then start speaking. Rambling on and on without any direction is the perfect way to bomb your interview.

  1. Be Prepared to Ask Questions

This is the golden rule for mastering an interview. Research the company beforehand. Be prepared to ask questions. Topics to research include their management style, the latest project the company is working on, or future plans for the company. An interview is not intended to be a one-way conversation.

  1. Thank You Note

Your interview is not over as soon as you walk out of that room. How you follow up with the interviewer is very important. Make it a point to send a thank you note or an email. This will make you stand out from the vast pool of candidates.

For students interviewing for their first job or internship, it is important to get acquainted with the basics of an in-person interview. This is your chance to showcase who you are and what your goals are. Above all, you should be in the right mindset while sitting down for an interview. If you really want the job, your interviewers will definitely be able to see it in the way you talk and answer their questions.

There are many short term IT courses which promise a lucrative career, are offered online as well as institutes. It’s not a bad idea to go through the skills which you developed in the past and brush them over.
  4. Volunteer in a NGO or for a social cause-Working for a social cause looks amazing on your resume. Find some NGO which are in need of volunteers and invest some time serving them. Most NGOs do not pay but are happy to provide with you with a certificate which holds great value. Not only it helps you develop some essential skills but is very rewarding otherwise.
  5. Socialise-If none of the above impresses you, then do some fun activities with your family and friends such as water sports, rock climbing, camping and glamping. Meeting family and friends would help you in link building and develop your social skills which would help you in the future while you are looking for a full time job.
