Microwave recipes for the always-hungry college student!

College life! There is nothing quite like it-bunking classes with your friends, long-nights at the library before the exam, an endless string of parties and the campus food. When you’re running low on the cash supply from home and feel bored of the food in the college canteen- midnight hunger pangs are a big problem!

College can be stressful, don’t let your meals be a part of that stress. Taking care of your nutrition and proper diet along with studies is extremely important. So, give your packet of Maggi noodles a break and let’s talk about some recipes which will give you a respite from the monotony!

 

1) Baked Potatoes- One of the easiest and tummy-filling recipes.

Rub the potatoes with oil, sprinkle them with salt and pepper, and prick them with a fork. Place all the potatoes on a microwave-safe dish and microwave at full power for five minutes. Turn them over and microwave for another three to five minutes. Sprinkle with cheese and chilli flakes and voila!

 

2)  Microwave Fried Egg- For when you need some protein intake.

Swirl some oil around in a bowl. Crack the egg into the bowl and break the yolk (you can also add a little salt, pepper, tomato sauce at this step). Cover with a kitchen paper towel. (It is very important to break the yolk and cover it as eggs will pop like a balloon when microwaved). Place in the microwave oven on full power for 1 minute. Stand for 1 minute to allow the microwave fried egg to settle down a bit. Enjoy with a buttered toast.

 

3) Masala Pulao- For that home cooked flavour!

Soak rice in water for at least fifteen minutes. Chop your favourite vegetables and keep basic spices and herbs like salt, cumin powder, red chilli powder and some garam masala ready. Mix all the ingredients in a microwave- safe bowl and add some water, lastly add some butter/ghee. Place in the microwave for 15-18 minutes and your masala rice is ready!

 

4) Pasta in a mug- For the junk food craving.

Take a coffee mug, add half cup macaroni and half cup water, add a pinch of salt and place in the microwave for 1 minute. Take out the mug and stir properly, place the mug back into the microwave for 1 minute till the water starts to boil. Now add 1 tablespoon pasta sauce, chilli flakes, oregano and 3 tablespoons of milk. You can also some cheese (optional). Mix everything and place in the microwave for 1 minute. Enjoy your hot and tasty red sauce pasta!

 

Another important tip is to keep your fridge stocked with milk and cereals for a quick breakfast. Also, for proper nutrition and fibre, try eating seasonal fruits as often as you can.

Remember, microwave cooking is all about improvising and using whatever ingredients you have around you. Don’t stress if you don’t have particular spices or vegetables, just use your creativity and play around!
