Ways to keep your hostel room clean and organized

Life in a hostel is filled with fun and freedom, and lots of friends too. So, it is important that you don’t forget to keep your room neat and clean amidst all the fun, studying and exams. As a student, it can be hard to get the time to clean, dust, and sweep. But we‘re here to help you with a few tips to make your room look neat, clean, and organized.

cgc-blog-2 (1)

Make your bed

Always make your bed. It will take 30 seconds but will automatically make your room feel neat. Plus, studies show that making your bed as soon as you wake up makes your day much better. And hey, it’s a single bed with one bedsheet, a couple of pillows and a comforter, right? How long would it take?

Use a rug

Brighten up your room with a funky rug, or a traditional design rug, if that is what you like. Regardless, a rug on the floor can completely transform the room, making it more cozy and inviting. And after a long day of classes, who doesn’t want to come back to a warm, comfy room?

Colorful pillows

Another way to improve the look of your hostel room is by using a few colorful pillows. If you have a roommate who thinks just like you, maybe you two can create a corner by the window as a seating area, or use these pillows on your chair or bed. Pillows will definitely improve the overall décor of the room.

Laundry day

One day a week is laundry day, but you can decide on the day. If you stick to one decided day, it will be easier to fall into a routine. Maybe Sunday morning can be your laundry day. Not all Indian hostels have a washer and dryer, and if you need to wash it or go out and give it to a laundry shop, decide on a day. That way, you know your pile of clothes will be demolished on that one day and it won’t turn your room into a shop’s dressing room.

Clean & dust

Another thing to remember is that cleaning and dusting is an invariable part of keeping your room neat and tidy. But, you can decide on a day. Maybe once a week or once every fifteen days is a good time to clean and dust your room. And if you have a roommate, you can always alternate chores.

Extra storage

For extra storage, you can get some plastic storage bins with locks or even fabric drawers that you can place on the floor or hang somewhere. These are easy and flexible storage options apart from your allotted space. You can also place these plastic or fabric drawers beneath your bed to save on space.

Posters on the walls

Want to make your room more fun and inviting? Well, you can always put up posters on the walls. Old bed sheets with stunning designs and embroidery on them are also a good idea to use on your walls and make your room less dreary and more fun.

So now, you definitely have no excuse to not turn your simple hostel room into a fun and comfortable room. Get started today!

The path to applying for jobs in your dream companies!

Most colleges have a placement program in place. In such programs, the companies visit the campus and interview many students right on the campus. However, for students who want to apply to jobs to the companies which are not a part of the college placement program, this is the right way to get started. We will offer a few tips on how to tackle this and the right way to land your dream job.

cgc-blog-1-jan

Do your research

Do your research well ahead of time. Make a list of companies coming on the campus, and a list of companies that you want to apply to but that don’t come on the campus. Along with the list of companies, you also need to make a corresponding list of application procedures. Have a list ready so you can get right into it once the application season starts.

Prepare your resume

Always prepare your resume ahead of time. Keep updating your resume with new projects, skills and experiences as you go. This makes it easy at the end to edit, proofread, and just send it across. You might also want to have a few print-outs of your resume in hand. You never know who you might find at networking events that could possibly help you out with a job application. And remember, good resumes are short, fit in one page but also give a proper brief about what you have done and your experiences.

Cold e-mails

Cold e-mailing is like cold calling. You don’t know the response, but you at least put your point across without the expectation of a reply. Cold e-mailing will not always produce the results you want because the point of this technique is to reach out to as many people as possible. That is it. It is not to actually apply for jobs. However, cold e-mailing is a technique that it is designed to increase your reach and visibility. Do not be disheartened if you don’t get responses from anyone.

Reach out to people

Reach out to as many people as you can. Get in touch with alumni from your college in similar fields, or with people you have met during internships or past corporate events. Reaching out to people helps you open more doors to new opportunities outside your campus. You can also reach out to people on LinkedIn, another great online tool for networking and connecting with potential employers.

It is not impossible to find a job on your own without the usual college resources. However, it takes a lot more time and effort when you are cold e-mailing, networking on your own, and applying for jobs. Make sure to keep an eye out on online job forums and career boards. Don’t be afraid to talk to people who you might think could possibly help you further your career goals. You will also need to give yourself sufficient time to apply for these jobs, get a possible response, and then interview before landing a job.

Public sector jobs: The future you might not have thought of

The public domain offers a lot of different opportunities for the youth. However, many aren’t aware of the job options they have. And that is one of the primary reason most students miss out on some wonderful opportunities. This article is a great starting point to begin researching how you can work for the country and make the country better.

cgc-blog-3

Indian Administrative Services (IAS)

The Indian Administrative Services are the crème de la crème of civil services in India. Only the best and the brightest are touted to get in. It falls under the combined umbrellas of All India Services. The IAS is inherently neutral and has no party affiliation. Those who want to enter the IAS first appear for the Civil Services Examination. However, the exam is quite tough and the success rate for students is merely 0.01%.

Indian Foreign Services (IFS)

The Indian Foreign Services (IFS) is the second arm of the All India Services. The IFS falls under the diplomatic arm of the government. Candidates must be well-versed with the country’s Foreign policies. Not only abroad, but candidates are also required to maintain foreign relations within India if selected for the IFS. The IFS requires students to pass the Civil Services Examination. It takes about 12 months for the entire selection process including the examination. The success rate for this exam is 0.02%.

Indian Police Services (IPS)

The third and final arm of the All India Services is the Indian Police Services (IPS). The IPS is self-explanatory, but to put it briefly, this is the division through which the union and state governments can choose candidates for the State Police and the Central Armed Police Forces. The Civil Services Examination is necessary for the candidates wanting to get into IPS. Training takes place in Hyderabad.

Indian Revenue Services

The Indian Revenue Services (IRS) falls under the Ministry of Finance. Selection in IRS is done via a three-step process. The first is the Civil Services Exam. Next is another exam and then comes the interview. Clearing these three stages means a candidate is eligible to become a part of any one of the two IRS branches. The IRS is probably the most selective of all the civil services since the success rate is a mere 0.025%.

Public Sector Units (PSU)

Public sector units are state-owned companies. The central, state or union government can own it. The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Airports Authority of India, etc. are just some of the well known Public Sector Units where candidates can find jobs based on their educational qualifications. These are considered government jobs.

Defense Services

Defense services in India are very rigorous. The first step is to pass the examinations to enter the National Defense Academy. Each part of the Indian Defense Services holds individual examinations as well. Candidates are often required to pass the written and the physical examination. Only candidates between the ages of 19 to 25 years can appear for the examination. Also, the candidates need to have a bachelor’s degree before appearing for this examination.

Indian Railways

The minimum educational qualification for candidates applying for the Indian Railways jobs is passing the 10th standard examinations. The Railway Recruitment Control Board manages recruitment and jobs for the Indian Railways. There are a total of 21 different Railway boards that govern the railway recruitment for their respective regions. Different types of examinations are conducted for different posts. However, a computer-based examination is conducted for most vacancies. Non-technical positions have a different set of examinations which include positions such as Traffic Assistant, Goods Guard, Assistant Station Master, etc.

Insurance Jobs

Insurance jobs in India for government-owned corporations are extremely location oriented. Candidates can look for vacancies in the Life Insurance Corporation of India and the National Insurance Co. Ltd. The basic requirement to apply includes a bachelor’s degree. There are a lot of perks and benefits associated with this job. You can keep an eye out on insurance vacancies in online portals. Insurance jobs are quite interesting since you deal with a lot of policies, premiums, etc.

Government hospitals

For medical students, jobs in government hospitals are the best option. The primary reason for this is the hands-on experience doctors get in civil hospitals. Each city and town has a government hospital, so there are a lot of openings and opportunities. For non-medical students, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has a lot of opportunities. Most students study in government medical colleges and then intern at the hospitals. But for students who study in private colleges, talking to the doctor in-charge is always a great idea.

State Public Service Commission

The State Public Service Commission has one unit in each state. This commission is responsible for conducting Civil Services Examination in each state along with looking after recruitment for various civil services and government sectors. Each state’s Public Service Commission looks after promotions and transfers of officers in the civil services. One needs some experience in the government in order to be put on the commission since it is the state governor who appoints the members. This might not be an immediate option, but definitely a long-term option for anyone working in the public domain.

Government jobs offer the security and financial benefits no other job can. The positions mentioned here are party-neutral. Changes in the ruling party during any elections do not hold any sort of threat to those employed in the civil services. Many government jobs also offer a residence for their officers, so the comfort level is quite high. Therefore, civil services and other public sector jobs do warrant some attention and research. These are viable career choices and you can always talk to your school counselor about further guidance.

The perfect cover letter can lend you the perfect job

A good cover letter is like making a good first impression. This is the first chance for you to make a good impression on the hiring manager. As a potential employee, you want to a make a strong first impression, and your resume is only the tip of the iceberg. A cover letter is more personal and talks more about you and your skills. Here are a few tips to write the perfect cover letter.

cgc-blog-2

Stay away from the cliches

Before you begin writing your cover letter, remember to stay away from generic formats. It is important that your cover letter should reflect you and be as unique as possible. Generic templates that ask you to just fill in the blanks would not do justice. A generic cover letter neither makes a good impression nor makes you stand out as an interesting potential employee.

Contact information

This is the most important part of your cover letter because if they don’t know how to contact you, how will they schedule a potential interview? That aside, the header should include your name, contact information, email address, and a professional title in case you are currently working. Beneath that should be the name of the hiring manager and their job title. All it takes is a little internet sleuthing to find out this information. Make sure to mention the name of the company as well.

Introduce yourself

The first paragraph should be about you. Introduce yourself, tell them what position you are applying for, and how you came to know about this position. The first paragraph is crucial in establishing a base for your candidacy. The next thing to mention in the first paragraph is a brief introduction to your degree, educational background, and a one-liner about how your career goals fit with the company’s goals.

Sell your brand

The current environment is one where you need to create a personal brand and sell that brand to the potential employers to stand out. The second part of the cover letter, the body, should include how and why you are a good fit for this job. Mention relevant work experience, skills or projects you have done in the past that are similar to what the company is looking for. This helps the reader understand how you will fit into the company. To add something extra, you can include insights into the company’s industry and talk about why you would be a good fit in this work environment.

Different than your resume

Remember, you already have a resume. Your cover letter cannot be an explanation of your resume. You need to offer something different in your cover letter. Simply stating where you worked before and your work title is as good as just copy pasting your resume in this format. Explain the skills you picked up, how you learned those skills, etc.

End strong

Always conclude your cover letter strongly. A call-to-action is preferable, wherein you mention how they can get in touch or that you look forward to the in-person interview, etc. Thank them for taking some time out and reading your cover letter. A cover letter is an extension of your resume where you dig deep into the relevant skills. It is not your resume, so read, re-read and edit your cover letter until you are sure it will get you the job.

Being an entrepreneur is not easy. One is constantly faced with an uphill battle filled with numerous road bumps. There are also times in an entrepreneur’s journey when he doubts his self-confidence, but the distinguishing quality is his ability to overcome this.

What can CGC offer you that other colleges can’t?

CGC, since its inception, has climbed the ranks steadily and become one of the well-known higher education institutes in Northern India. CGC has two campuses, one in Landran and the other in Jhanjeri. Both the campuses are located within traveling distance from the City Beautiful, Chandigarh!

The administration and leadership at CGC have worked long and hard to create programs and initiatives to benefit students. Some of these programs are unlikely to be heard before. So, let’s delve a little deeper into what CGC has to offer that other colleges can’t.

blog 3 CGC

Earn while you learn

Students in the West have been doing this for a long time, but the concept is still new to India. Working while you study is almost unheard in India. But, CGC has introduced this concept to its students. Currently, it has tied up with over 6 major companies to offer part-time employment opportunities to the students. This allows students to pursue work opportunities after class hours or even during holidays and vacations. This has a two-fold benefit: It allows the students to learn more about the corporate world and also helps them earn money for their expenses.

International tie-ups

CGC has tied up with some of the top universities across the world to create exchange programs for students in CGC and other universities. These international tie-ups give students the opportunity to pursue summer or winter school at universities or study abroad for a semester or even intern abroad for a period of time. This international exposure is vital for the students of today who are exposed to the global market phenomena. CGC also regularly arranges programs where students from foreign universities visit CGC, a great opportunity for CGC students to interact with the international students.

NCC

The National Cadet Corps or NCC is a student organization that teaches students some extremely valuable lessons. The NCC in CGC is affiliated to 23 Punjab Battalion, NCC Ropar. This organization aims to teach students courage, camaraderie, discipline, leadership, and other values. The NCC is rigorous and demands a lot from its members. That’s why we have a wing of NCC at CGC. We believe that discipline, motivation, leadership skills, and humanitarian skills can be learnt with the right teachers and the right set of rules.

NSS

The National Service Scheme is an organization with roots in social service. CGC wants its students to become well-rounded and good people, not just good employees. NSS helps them take part in social work, allows them to organize tree plantation drives, drug de-addiction program, anti-dowry and women empowerment program, blood donation programs and much more. Students work with the aim of educating their fellow students as well as their community on various important issues. The NSS is the pride of CGC.

Industry-Academia Interface

CGC has made it easy for the students to get opportunities to interact with the industry stalwarts. This gives CGC students an edge because they already have a foot in the door due to various programs and events organized by CGC. Under this initiative, CGC has established the Entrepreneur Development Cell (EDC) and the Management Development Projects (MDP). These programs play an important role in helping the students develop their entrepreneur ideas and take up research projects to further develop their interest. Various training programs, networking events, and conferences are organized with industry experts to educate the students.

Student Care Center

Most colleges have a complaint box or a place where they can submit their grievances, but CGC is one of the only colleges that have established a Student Care Center. The center falls under the Dean of Student Welfare who oversees all the complaints that go through the SCC. The SCC was established to give students one place they can approach for any issues. Plus, the SCC administration makes sure all issues are resolved within 24 hours which is great for the students’ morale. Students are encouraged to approach the SCC with any sort of problem they might be facing.

CGC Restaurant

A restaurant on campus? Yes, that is right. CGC has its very own restaurant that caters to the entire visiting faculty, dignitaries as well as guests who visit for workshops or training sessions. The restaurant is well decorated with a unique ambience. The restaurant itself is an amazing feather in CGC’s cap since not many campuses cater to its visitors in this manner.

E-Library & Journals

CGC has one of the most well organized libraries in the region. Called the Knowledge Resource Center, the library has books and technology that helps students study. Not just that, CGC has also subscribed to various national and international journals and periodicals which help students stay updated with the latest happenings in their field. They have a vast collection of books and e-books to assist students with their education or research. Audio-visual materials are also available for the students to browse.

Sports Facilities

The Sports facilities at CGC are extraordinary. CGC encourages competitive training as well as recreational training in sports. It has a hockey team, a basketball team, a badminton team, and an athletic team among others. The university often participates in sports competitions and organizes the same on campus as well. The gym is a great place for the students who want to work out and stay fit. At CGC, students are given much more than just books and homework; they are given the opportunity to learn and grow.

We believe in giving our students the best of everything. The world-class facilities, classrooms equipped with technology, and career advancement opportunities make our students one of the best in the country. We want to create good leaders, not just good students.

Learn a new language

This is the age of multi-lingual ism. The more languages you know the better for you. As in India, you always have the advantage of knowing at least two languages. But, if you plan on travelling or working outside India, it is great to know another language. Plus, you might be surprised what doors can open when you add that language to your resume.

Learn a new skill

It is never too late to learn a new skill. Online courses are extremely common and it is easy to find an online course you really like. From hand lettering to graphic design, from learning how to cook to how to make paper, online courses cover everything. When you have free time in your hands, it is always a good idea to use that time wisely. And learning a new skill can help you down the line.

Network with industry professionals

Networking events happen regularly at big companies. You can also attend your school or college’s networking events since they often invite alumni students. Networking is one of those silent things that has incredible benefits. You never know if the person you are talking to could pass your resume to the right people or schedule a job interview you have been waiting for. It might seem a little weird to go around a roomful of people talking about your skills, but it is worth it in the end.

Call your contacts

Every student has done at least one internship during college. For those who are a little more adventurous, two or three internships are not out of the ordinary. It is smart to build a network of people in the company where you did your internship. This can help you in the future and is one of the first exercises you will ever do in networking. Call them, e-mail your resume, ask if they know of any job openings, and even better, connect with them on LinkedIn to see if they can put in a good word for you with another professional.

Get your references in order

Companies still require references. If you have worked summer jobs or have previous internships, now is a good time to make sure your references are in order. Give your references a call, catch up with them and just gently remind them that they are on your reference list. Make sure they know that they might get a call from a potential employer inquiring about your work.

This gap period when you are looking for jobs is you should not spend sleeping or wasting. Hone your skills, network, catch up with friends, and pass around your resume like it is nobody’s business and you will definitely land that dream job.

What do recruiters look for in today’s students?

Today’s employers have different expectations from their potential employees. Today’s workforce is dramatically different as well. Therefore, it becomes imperative for the students about to enter the workforce to understand what their employers expect of them. And these skills are not for any specific industry. They work for every single industry that could potentially hire students. Let’s go through the list and understand the importance of each skill.

Blog 1

Ability to learn new things

The world is changing at a mind-boggling pace. Today’s student who is about to enter the real world is expected to keep up with the changes in hisindustry. He is expected to stay updated with every new discovery. A new discovery could dramatically alter the direction of any industry and abilityto learn new things is the key to success. For example, computer programmers or Computer Application students are expected to keep up with new programming languages.

Communication skills

Communication skills are incredibly important in today’s job market. As companies go global and teamwork is given the priority, communication becomes the key. Not just communication, but clear, precise, and concise communication is essential. Today’s student is expected to be able to holdthe conversation with a client, colleague or a superior. They are expected to convey business matters in a certain language with a certain tone. And you might not know this, but clear communication can make or break a business deal.

Being proactive and responsible

Employers today want students to take ownership of their work. They want employees to be responsible and accountable for all they do. And not just that, they want employees to be proactive and go beyond their prescribed job role. The workplace is not just about playing within well-defined boundaries, it has become about how far you can push the boundaries to establish yourself as a good employee.

Problem-solving skills

An employee who can remain calm in the state of pressure or crises is the ideal employee. Most companies want employees who think on their feet and can resolve issues and problems without any sort of escalation. Problem-solving skills are extremely important because they are the key component of creative solutions to everyday problems.  This is one of the most valued skills in any new age company. So make sure you work on it from early on.

Teamwork

Teamwork makes the dream work. More and more companies put an emphasis on teamwork because that is how they can ensure the success of their projects. Teamwork is important because most projects require a set of vastly different skills. Being a team player also helps in personal and professional growth of a person. It creates a better understanding of the human nature and is good for the company’s overall health.

It is important for the students to understand that only technical know-how in their field cannot help them. They need essential soft skills to succeed. Technical skills combined with soft skills create the perfect recipe for a good employee.

How will Artificial Intelligence affect jobs in the future?

Today’s college students often wonder if the degree they are studying for will remain relevant in the next ten years. While looking at their future prospects, an integral question they should be able to answer is whether their skills will be important and relevant in the near future. This is because technological inventions are having an impact on the way we work, and artificial intelligence is the future, as every new discovery points towards that.

blog (1)

So, what can a student do to ensure that his skills are sought after while still in college? Well, it is important to understand what AI is, what it does for us currently, and what it is posited to do in the future. Here is a look at how artificial intelligence could possibly affect the job market in the future:

Will downsizing happen?

Downsizing essentially means cutting down on the workforce and not eliminating it completely. Downsizing has been a part of every business and industry, and the trend will continue, this will keep happening as companies keep incorporating technology into their processes. Instead of worrying about downsizing in the future, the better option is to think about how you can make yourself an indispensable part of your company.

Importance of unique skill sets

Tasks that need no skill or minimal amount of skills are more than likely to be taken over by AI, thus it has become important now, more than ever, to recognize and master a unique skill set. Tasks that are monotonous and do not require special skills, are cheaper when completed by a machine than human labour. Therefore, it is important for today’s students to figure out how they can stand out from the crowd and be different. This also means constantly learning new things, evolving, and teaching yourself new skills.

Reorganization vs. elimination

Artificial intelligence being introduced into company processes will mean reorganization as opposed to elimination. This is where the management of any company needs to come together to learn and organize AI and human labour together and create the best possible business practices for the company. Thus, the students need to be constantly ready to adapt to the changes in their environment.

Creating new business processes

Everyone is scared of losing their jobs, but what they should really be talking about is how to reorganize and recreate business processes to incorporate AI into their business functions. Adaptability in the workplace will be one of the most sought-after skills in the future. Just because AI will become a part of the workforce does not necessarily mean that people won’t be required to do certain tasks. If anything, using AI will be able to complement a worker’s tasks. This will increase the quality of the person’s work and help him become more efficient.

Inherently human skills

What sets us apart from machines and technology is humanity. There are certain tasks and jobs with an inherent human element that cannot be taken away or replicated by a machine. Research studies show that any job that involves crunching a large amount of data or numbers is likely to be impacted by AI. However, jobs that require any sort of judgment, empathy or an aspect of humanity in its decision making will be the least impacted. Archaeologists, massage therapists, and scientists will probably have minimal impact on their work.

What can a student about to enter the workforce do?

We advise you to keep yourself constantly updated about the technological innovations in your field. You can do this by subscribing to trade journals or reading the news and research articles about your areas of interest. While interviewing for jobs, we would advise students to ask about the company’s long-term plans. In this changing landscape, one of the questions to ask your potential employer is what part will technology play in their company in the future. If the company is heavily invested in the technology industry, you could also ask how AI will impact jobs and business processes in the future. A good company will know the answers to these questions which can help you decide the right workplace for yourself.

The need of the hour is not to shun Artificial Intelligence but to work together and see how AI can complement human intelligence. It is an undeniable fact that AI will become an integral part of the workforce and change the way humans work across all platforms. So, while we have a clear picture of the future, why not embrace it? Know what is happening in the tech industry because that is the only way you will know how to deal with the obstacles that come your way.
