Planning to be an entrepreneur? Here is how the government offers support for the startups.

Entrepreneurship is quickly becoming a lucrative career choice for people of all ages. With the open support that startups receive, more and more people have the courage to pursue their dreams. In India, the government has launched various initiatives to support startups in different ways. Based on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index, India has markedly improved its rankings by jumping up 23 positions in 2018. These initiatives to support startups, among other things have made it easier to do business in India.

Make in India

The ‘Make in India’ initiative, although started in late 2014, continues to have an impact even today. It has shifted the focus back to India’s capabilities to manufacture and produce within the country. This initiative is particularly beneficial for startups because it promotes innovation and research as well as  VC investments.

Startup India

Startup India is perhaps one of the biggest initiatives aimed at helping the startups grow and succeed. This particular move by the government has fostered mentoring within the startup community. It has also provided different avenues for startups to grow including funds via the “Fund of Funds” scheme. The Startup India Learning Programme, Relaxed Procurement Norms, and ease of filing patents have made it easy for entrepreneurs to turn their dream into a startup.

This program called Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women is aimed at helping women learn the necessary skills required to work and gain financial independence. This program, initially limited to the rural areas, has now expanded to the entire country. Sectors in which training is offered via this program include handloom and handicraft, hospitality, IT, agriculture, and even food processing.

Digital India

Digital India is not just limited to startups; it is aimed at changing the entire business landscape of India. With a move towards creating a digital business environment, this initiative is impressive and will help startups a lot. Modern-day startups rely a lot on digital technology, and therefore, initiatives under the umbrella of Digital India make online transactions easier. It also makes it easy for startups to build online platforms and reach a wider base of consumers via various online methods.

The business environment in India today is quite conducive to startups. Today, under the various startup schemes, the government of India has recognized over 19000 startups. About 100 startups have already been exempt from income tax based on their recognition by the government. The incredible benefits offered to startups make it easy to turn your passion into reality. The key is to find a gap in the market and then make sure your solution fills that gap. Startup culture is becoming more prominent and widely acceptable. Therefore, there is no time like now to run your own startup.

An introduction to the GMAT

The GMAT or the Graduate Management Admissions Test is a competitive exam that tests the candidates on different areas including writing skills, analytical skills, and logical reasoning skills. This test is accepted worldwide as a part of the admission process for candidates into graduate programs, especially the Management programs. Let’s find out a bit more about what the test entails along with some essential information about the test.

What is GMAT?

GMAT is one of the primary requirements for admission into most MBA programs. These days, GMAT scores are also becoming a requirement for most business-related management programs. The exam

opens an incredible number of doors for the candidates who want to pursue a Management degree. The GMAT tests students on important skills required to pursue a Master’s degree. The score also provides a way for the admissions office of any college to compare the skill level of all the students applying for that particular program.

Areas of testing

There are four sections on the GMAT exam: Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. The Integrated Reasoning section checks how well you can analyze the given information and use it to answer questions. The Analytical Writing section tests your ability to craft an essay based on the argument provided in the text. The aim is to analyze the writing and not form your opinion about it. Next is the Verbal section which includes sentence correction, reading & comprehension, and critical reasoning questions. Lastly, the Quantitative Reasoning section is all about problem-solving and data sufficiency questions. Each of these skills is important for the students to pursue a higher degree in management.

The basic details

The GMAT has a score between 200 and 800. An important thing to note is that it is a computer-based test and not just an electronic version of the paper test. However, the test software uses the number of questions you answer correctly or incorrectly to generate the next question and its difficulty level. Therefore, if you give wrong answers, the test will give you easier questions and grade you accordingly. However, if you get the answers correct, you will get difficult questions and be graded accordingly. This important piece of information will help you prepare for the exam properly.

Acceptance in India and abroad

Currently, India has its very own CAT exam for Management programs across the country. However, there are about 90 institutes in India which accept GMAT scores as a part of their college application. All the IIM institutes as well as many top business schools in the country accept the GMAT. The GMAT is accepted in colleges and Universities across the world including Australia, Europe, North America, Canada, and even in South America. The GMAT has become the standard measure of a candidate’s ability at a Master’s level.

GMAT is an important exam for anyone aspiring to get into a good business school. The exam requires a lot of preparation and practice tests, but in the end, it is all worth it if you get a good score.

How to prepare for a job interview?

Preparing for a job interview is like preparing for an exam. You need to prepare your material well before heading into the big day. The in-person interview is one of the hardest parts of the job because you get a chance to create a good first impression on the potential employer. Let’s see how you can prepare for a job interview ahead of time. This list of tips is enough to help you get prepared, prepped, and psyched for one of the most important events of your life.

Dress for the job
The age-old adage, “dress for the job”, is quite relevant even today. No matter what position you are applying for, it is important to dress to make a good first impression. In today’s work environment, a formal outfit is deemed appropriate when going for a job interview.

Research the company

Companies like it when prospective employees come well-researched about the company they are applying to. An interviewer will always appreciate you asking questions about the company, its performance, and especially its past projects. So go into the interview armed with important facts about the company.

Research your industry

Not just the company, the industry you are in requires a little research as well. This is important to send a message to your employer that you are willing to stay updated about the changes and advances in the industry. Also, make sure you read up on the latest industry news before heading to your interview.

Prepare answers

Always prepare answers beforehand, at least to the questions you can anticipate. There is a set of generic questions that most interviewers will ask such as your strengths and weaknesses, your experience, and something about you. These questions require clear and concise answers, so prepare ahead.

Work on your body language

Your body language plays an important role in the impression you make on your interviewer. If you keep fidgeting with your hands or legs, it shows that you are incredibly nervous and not prepared. An interview can be stressful, so why not prepare ahead and learn to manage your nervousness?

Work on your pauses

While speaking normally, we tend to add a lot of pauses including “um”, “uh”, etc. While practicing your answers in front of a mirror, you should be careful about how many pauses you take and the number of times you use filler words. It is better to take an extra minute to compose your answer in the head than to pause every few seconds to collect your thoughts.

Prepare questions to ask

A good interviewer will always appreciate an interviewee who has prepared a set of questions to ask. Whether it is about the company, the position or anything pertaining to the interview, asking questions to the person sitting across the table showcases your willingness to research, learn, and form informed questions. How the other person responds will also give you an idea of the company’s culture, employee culture, and how open they are to answering the difficult questions.

Know your time slot

A job interview usually takes place at the offices of the company, which you might not be familiar with. It might be in a new part of the town or at a certain distance with traffic. It is important to travel this route at least once to check how long it takes you to get there. If you are using public transportation, make sure to check the times for the specific day you are heading to the interview.

Understand the job description

Before you apply for any job, the first thing you usually do is read the job description. However, there is a second time you should refer back to the job description, and that is while preparing for the interview. The job description gives you a good idea of what the employers are looking for in a prospective candidate. You can tailor your answers accordingly and also highlight your skills that better relate to the job description provided by the company.

Prepare for the behavioral questions

Some of the most commonly asked questions are about how you would perform in a certain situation. It is important to prepare for such questions in advance. You can look up commonly asked behavioral questions and have a few talking points in your mind before you head to the interview. The better prepared you are, the better it is when you actually need to answer questions. This will also help you to be more coherent and present your thoughts in an organized manner.

“Tell me about yourself”

The most frequently asked question during the interview process is “Tell me something about yourself”. Although it seems a simple question at face value, it is actually a loaded question that often catches the candidates off guard. So this question is actually a way for the interviewer to gain insight into things you haven’t mentioned in your application or resume. So while preparing yourself for the interview, be sure to add information, experiences, and skills that are not necessarily highlighted in your resume.

Note of thanks

Interviewers always appreciate a note of thanks after the interview is over. Simply send an email or a handwritten card saying thank you for your time, hope to hear from you soon, etc. This is a polite way to appreciate the fact that they made time for you and to make sure they remember you even after the interview is over.

Every aspect of the interview process is created to test the candidate. From checking your communication skills to testing your technical skills, an interview is designed to check a candidate’s ability to fit into the company. These tips will help you ace the interview and land the job of your dreams. Make sure to follow each one of them so that you put your best foot forward in the big interview.

India v/s abroad: The pros and cons of different education systems

The education system in India is greatly different than the education systems abroad, be it Europe or North America. Our education system is rooted in respect for learning but is definitely more structured and rigid. Education outside India is focused on discovering new knowledge, and exploring different forms of learning. With these primary differences in mind, the question for every student at some or the other point in their life is: Where should I study?

Education in India

Education in India is very structured. One might say that this is a leftover from the British era. Whether it is a school or a college, our courses and academic years are very structured. Rarely you’ll see a teacher deviate from what was taught in Grade 8 last year to what is being taught in Grade 8 this year. This structure provides a great foundation which is an undeniable truth. The Indian education system will make your foundations strong and clear allowing you to explore your interests more easily in life because your basics are crystal clear.

We are also quite focused when it comes to how college courses are structured. When you pick a stream of learning, your college will tend to create a curriculum that revolves around the primary subject. For example, an Indian student studying Psychology will study subjects in this field and will rarely study something like marketing or accounting along with it. This extreme focus is also helpful later in life when students want to specialize in a particular subject.

Education Abroad

One of the biggest advantages of education abroad is the flexibility offered by international colleges. In an American college, students are able to study volcanoes, literature, Roman history, and art all at the same time. This luxury isn’t afforded to the students in India. This flexibility allows students to satisfy their creative questions, a quest for knowledge, and thirst for learning something exciting. Perhaps this flexibility is why more and more students are opting to study abroad. Not just this, students have up to two years to decide their major or field of study. This allows them to explore subjects in depth and make an informed choice about their future.

Broaden your horizons

Studying outside India can definitely be a giant leap out of your comfort zone. However, the reward is in meeting new people from different cultures and expanding your worldview. Coming out of your cocoon will teach you to be independent, self-reliant, and take more responsibility for yourself. You will learn how to see things from other people’s perspectives, come in contact with people who have vastly different experiences than yours and learn from them. This will help you become a better person and a better professional because you are now able to interact with people from anywhere in the world.

It goes without saying that education systems in India and abroad come with their set of merits and demerits. This decision also largely depends on the field of study you choose, your finances, and what you want to do in the future. Make a wise choice.

Why is personality and skill development essential along with academics?

The ability to do something by applying knowledge which comes from training, experience, or practice is called a skill. All of us know these typical definitions for students. But when it comes to taking a pragmatic approach towards education, what makes both these factors equivalent? Personality and skill development are imperative along with academics, but the question is why? The current education system prevails with an intention to enhance abilities in terms of performance and therefore is not just marks oriented.

Career Growth

Academics teach you the technical skills, but it is personality and skill development that are needed to learn the soft skills necessary to succeed in life. It is impossible to succeed with one set of skills. Therefore, students need to be prepared from early on with a set of exceptional soft skills if they seek career growth, development, and success in their professional life. Today, there are many consultants and programs that train students in such skills to help them become better employees.

Future Prospects

Take a scenario with two students: One student is exceptionally talented in programming but lacks proper communication skills and the other student is moderately skilled in programming but has great interpersonal and communication skills. Can you decide which one would make a better impression on a potential employer in placementinterviews? The second student has better future prospects simply because his overall skill set is much more advanced.

All-round Development

Education seeks to make not just better students, but better professionals and better citizens of the world. Therefore, it becomes important to help students achieve all-round development while they are in college. All-round development can be the key to become a more well-rounded professional who is able to work in any setting. With globalization bringing companies spread across the globe closer and closer, a well-developed professional with good written, verbal, listening, interpersonal and leadership skills is more likely to be able to work with his counterparts across the world.

Better Leaders

Our country needs students who will grow up to be exceptional leaders and thinkers. How can we achieve this goal? We can do this through personality and skill development to create leaders and managers who do not follow the crowd. While academics gives them the base they need to work in a corporate environment, personality and skill development is the extra boost that will propel them towards success.

Academics provide knowledge and wisdom. On the other hand, skills allow students to drive through their chosen career. An educated individual may not get hired, but a skilled individual is always preferred over a purely academic individual when it’s time to hire. Also, skill development in the student from an early age has a greater impact. This phenomenon can add great value to the workforce of the nation later. Personality development permits a student to be a professional and adopt real work life situations with ease. With international opportunities becoming available at our doorstep, it becomes crucial to meet the global standards in terms of not just work, but also the manpower we hire.

The importance of taking online classes to hone your skills and why it’s beneficial for students

In the 21st century, education has taken a new turn with technology being at the forefront. How we learn has changed drastically because how we study has changed as well. Technology is seeping into our education system and remote learning, online classes, and online courses are becoming the norm of the day.

Today, there are different platforms that offer multiple options to study a ton of different topics. Some of them are free while others require subscriptions to access the entire range of courses. The boost online platforms have received over the last few years has resulted in a widespread learning spree. Online courses allow anyone sitting anywhere to learn a new set of skills or hone their existing skills. Learning new skills adds to your repertoire and enhances your abilities to do a task effectively. Employers will also value you more if you take the time to hone your skills and keep yourself updated. Learning from home via online courses comes with its own set of benefits.

5 benefits of taking online courses to learn new skills

1. Flexible schedule

Going to an actual school or college means devoting considerable time, money, and resources towards commuting to college. You have to consider the cost of transportation and the time it takes as well. With online courses, you have the luxury of a flexible schedule that allows you to study at your convenience. You can watch videos or browse the educational material wherever and whenever you want to study.

2. Keep up with changing trends

It is important in many industries to keep up with the changing trends. Take marketing for example. Changes in traditional ways of marketing have brought digital marketing to the forefront. Knowing how social media advertising works is an important part of any marketing professional. You can take online courses to learn the ins and outs of digital marketing and stay updated with this particular industry.

3. Vast choice of courses

A traditional college has its limitations. And for those wanting to pursue courses at unusual times, be it during school or after college, a college isn’t the easiest option. Therefore, online platforms offer unlimited paths. But with online platforms also comes a wide array of choices. You can study anything you want at any level. You can learn a new language or how to bake a cake or even how to build a website from scratch.

4. Considerably lower cost

Online courses are considerably cheaper. So you might be learning the same thing as in the actual physical course, but for a lower cost. Many online platforms are free, and the paid ones have a small annual fee that allows you to access every single course available on that platform. Although you are spending time studying, you are saving on the time spent going to an actual classroom and the costs associated with it.

5. Learn at your pace

Being able to learn at your own pace is a joy in itself. Every person learns at a different pace and understands materials differently. Online courses are usually open year-round and allow the person to learn at his own pace. This means that you can go through a video ten times if you need to learn the material or skip them if you are familiar with the material.

Apart from the numerous advantages one gets by studying via an online course, it is also important to note that these skill boosters can help you stand apart from your peers. In today’s competitive world, it is incredibly important to stand apart from the crowd and make your mark.

4 reasons why it is important to stand out from your peers

1. Stand out from the crowd

Employers today can take their pick from a vast pool of candidates. In this environment, it is essential to stand out from the crowd. Your extra certifications and online courses can help you present yourself as one of the best options to a potential employer. You are also showing them that you are skilled and serious about your future since you took the time to learn.

2. Lucrative skill set

Online courses, if chosen correctly can allow you to offer a lucrative skill set to the potential employers. This lucrative skill set can also help you become an entrepreneur. For a marketing graduate who wants to start his or her business, it is important to learn the basics of finance and accounting. An online course can help mitigate this problem by giving them access to the best material. A computer science graduate has just learned a new coding language. He or she wants to update their resume and therefore, online courses present the perfect opportunity.

3. Career advancement

An updated skill set can offer you many career advancement opportunities. When you are able to differentiate yourself from your peers through education and skills, it always creates a good impression on your employers. You are in a position where you can now be given more responsibilities because you took the initiative to update yourself with the knowledge required for that particular field.

4. Salary negotiation

Another perk that most people don’t realize comes from learning new skills is the ability to negotiate a better salary or a better package. When you prove yourself to be better armed with knowledge as compared to your peers, you stand out. These special abilities and special knowledge give you a boost when it comes to performance reviews and salary negotiations. Employers and organizations appreciate people who know their worth, especially if they are willing to do the work to stand out in the crowd.

Online courses have manifold benefits. Whether it means turning your hobby into a profession or advancing in your profession due to better skills, these online courses offer something new for everyone. These courses take up less time and resources and are not limited to any age group or geographical location.

Social Dynamics and Communication Skills

Communication is a two-way process that enables you to exchange your thoughts, notions, and opinions with each other. Communication has now become imperative to succeed in the world of business. Social dynamics such as conferences, interviews and even conversations during networking call for excellent communication skills.

Often, it is true that one who reads can write well. Similarly, one who is a good listener tends to be a good communicator. Communication is not a necessity in the 21st century, it is a skill.  Several kinds of communication skills are vital for social dynamics which are jotted down.

1. Verbal Communication

Verbal communication skills are used every single day in most social settings. The way you talk is an insight into your skills and your personality. When your words are confident, it leaves a great impression on the other person. The skill of clarity in speech, careful selection of words, voice modulations, responsiveness, and considering your audience will impact your communication personally as well as professionally. It is also necessary to be able to articulate your thoughts because that is the primary way you will be expressing your opinions on social settings.

2. Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal communication is another type of communication essential in today’s world. Getting the right balance of verbal and non-verbal communication is a necessity in today’s world, no matter which setting you are in. On a personal level, it is essential to build relationships with your family or the significant other. And in your professional life, interpersonal communication is necessary to showcase your skills as a good employee and a good leader.  For instance, you are in a meeting where you stare at your watch frequently. This signals the counterpart that you are not interested and have something more important elsewhere.

3. Visual Communication

When it comes to communication mediums, visual communication is the strongest medium in the current era. For instance, a strong logo is a great way for a brand to communicate with its followers or clients. A great example of visual communication is pop-ups while playing a game which shows the necessity of visual communication for a successful marketing strategy in any business.

4. Listening

Apart from these three main modes of communication, listening is also an important way of communicating. For example, in an interview, if a candidate does not hear the question properly, he/she won’t be able to answer it well. Hence, developing listening skills is an essential aspect of improving your communication skills.

5. Formal/Informal Communication

When we talk about formal communication, it has a great impact on any organization/business. Reports, e-mails, proposals, etc., are used for formal communication and creates a professional work ethic. Informal communication, on the other hand, allows people to put forward their concerns, discuss problems or solutions or bounce around creative ideas. Communication done informally considers the feeling of others and thus, is a vital part of all social situations.

Communication is an inescapable part of life, whether it is in a formal or an informal setting, in an office or at
home. Navigating social dynamics requires a range of communication skills and this list will surely help you understand how to communicate better.

What to look for while searching for a Master’s College?

Students and parents are always concerned about education during schooling days. And a similar situation arrives when it is time to decide about a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. It is just as important to do your research while looking for an undergraduate college as it is for a master’s college. There are several necessary factors to think of critically when choosing a college since a master’s degree is even more competitive and specialized.

1. Know your stream and its availability

The first and foremost factor that is vital to consider is the choice of a stream or subject for the master’s degree. A student must know his interests thoroughly before deciding on which colleges to apply to. The domain he/she is interested in is looked before the journey starts for finding a suitable college. Once you know where your interest lies, then look at the colleges offering relevant programs and find out their admission process and requirements. This is essential because master’s programs are specialized and you might need a certain type of academic background to apply to those colleges.

2. Feel familiar with the culture

Secondly, it is important to learn about the college’s atmosphere and culture. Some colleges promote extra-curricular activities more than others. What is your preference? Does it match with the college you are applying to?  A college typically offering a master’s degree must have an environment conducive to the students and promote research, education, and learning. A college culture that suits you can serve you better.

3. Admission criteria and financial aid

You might have a few colleges on your list that are your dream colleges, but you must be aware of their admission criteria. A realistic evaluation of personal capabilities matching the admission requirements is a must to select a college for your Masters. Following the admission rules, it is also vital to see if the college offers financial aid or scholarship and the criteria for the same. Some students require financial assistance and therefore, this part of the application process is quite important.

4. Student Support

This term deals with a binary aspect of college life. A student who is about to select a college for their master’s degree should analyze the extent to which the college or university is supportive of their students. Similarly, the student also needs to check the peer to peer support network which include mentoring programs or student-run organizations on campus.

5. Practical exposure

The colleges you are looking at must equip their students with practical and theoretical aspects in all areas of study. In the 21st century, a person who is going to seek a master’s degree requires both sets of skills to be successful in the future. This can include providing opportunities for internships, fellowships, training, workshops, and live projects. The college practicing this should rank higher in your list as compared to other colleges.

Other than the factors mentioned above, it is essential to consider the graduation rate of students, the percentage of students employed after graduating from the program, the accreditation of the college, and the industry connections that can benefit students. It is imperative to consider all aspects before deciding on a master’s college because this is about creating a successful future for yourself.

Tips for Personal Interviews, Group Discussions and Written Ability Tests

There are certain parameters with which every interviewee should abide by for a positive outcome. Interviews are not just your gateway to jobs and professional career, but they enhance an individual’s confidence and communication abilities. Here are a few tips on facing an interview:

1)    Dress appropriately

Your choice of attire may not be an important issue for an interview in many industries, but dressing up appropriately leaves a good
impression on the potential employer.  In recent years, many companies have relaxed the norms for strict dress codes thereby promoting semi-formal or casual attires during interviews. However, the rules are different in the corporate world where you are expected to dress in a formal attire. Thus, always go for an interview after doing your homework on the dress code.

2) Ask questions

Always go prepared to ask questions from the panel of experts interviewing you as it reflects on your acumen and sense of curiosity. Never say no when you are asked to come up with doubts or questions. Reveal your inquisitive side that portrays you as an individual who is willing to learn and progress.

3)    Do not interrupt the interviewer

Listening is as important as speaking during an interview. Never interrupt the interviewer as it depicts the negative side of your personality related to your restlessness. Even if you know the answer to the question the interviewer is asking, don’t be in a hurry to answer and wait for your turn to speak.

4)    Right attitude

The gestures or non verbal cues give an insight into your personality, hence it becomes very important to portray confidence without being arrogant. Maintain a poise and avoid nervousness or actions hinting at distraction such as fiddling with your pen, clothes or hair, unnecessary movement of legs and arms or touching your face and scratching your head. Also, make an eye contact with the interviewer and keep smiling at regular intervals as it emphasizes upon the self assurance.

5)    Appropriate language

Right from greeting the interviewers to giving the details about your
personal and professional background, one must be courteous and
modest. Elaborate your answers in a manner that speaks about your
communication skills. Also, use good vocabulary to emphasize upon your
skills, information and decision making abilities.

Being articulate, confident in answering, and driving home your point on the topic of debate are the keys to impress every participant in the  group discussion. Group discussions are a way of expressing your thoughts with conviction and without disparaging with what others are saying. Here are some tips for participating in GDs.

1)    Be attentive

Be attentive and listen to every individual expressing his/her thoughts and do not interrupt as it is impolite and portrays the negative aspect of your personality. Speak only at an appropriate time when you feel your opinion will make a difference.

2)    Clarity in thoughts

Structure your thoughts with clarity and present them in a logical manner. This will keep you focussed on your views and add weight to what you convey.

3)    Acknowledge and appreciate others

Acknowledging and appreciating what others are saying is an important aspect to keep in mind while participating in a group discussion. It is not necessary to be vocal but simple gestures like nodding your head in affirmation or smiling at the speaker can convey your appreciation.

4)    Articulate with precision

Be very precise in conveying your thoughts and use simple yet good vocabulary making it easy for others to comprehend. It is significant to keep a track of time when you speak as it should not be lengthy to the extent of becoming boring.

5)    Speak loudly and clearly

Speak loudly and clearly without being brash. Don’t mince words even when you falter but carry on with confidence and complete your sentence with conviction.

There is no rocket science that goes into preparation for a writing ability test but a simple five-point formula that you need to incorporate in your practice.

1) Read as much as you can

Reading improves your ability to understand and imagine which reflects in your writing. Thus, spend at least 2-3 hours on reading everyday as it will improve your vocabulary in addition to the expansion of your thought process.

2)  Write more

Pick up your pen whenever you have time and start writing as it is the best way to gather your thoughts and express them in a constructive way. Make it a habit to check everything you write today the following day and make improvements.

3)    Structure your sentences well

It is important to structure your sentences in a frame that conveys the meaning clearly. Elaboration should be directly proportional to the questions asked. Avoid explanations where the message can be clearly written in less words.

4)    Time management

Time constraint is of utmost importance especially when you are aiming to complete every task with accuracy. Divide your time according to the need of the writing tasks, as some parts are lengthy and require more time while other segments ought to be attempted concisely.

5)    Expert help

No one is perfect and there is always a room for improvement, thus seeking help is advisable and normal. Don’t hesitate to show your written work to your teachers, professors, and guides. You can also take the help of various software programs to check and improve your language.

With optimism comes the confidence that changes your life forever. Do not count your failures but aim for success and it will follow you like a shadow.

Why should students develop the habit of reading books?

“To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.”

— W. Somerset Maugham

All of us have heard in our lives that reading a book can take us to a different horizon or a parallel universe, where the imaginations of the writer are vividly captured by the reader. However, the larger question to dwell upon is, when in today’s world Facebook and Twitter have become the messengers of information and knowledge, why is it still important for us to read in conventional ways like we used to before this technological revolution? How does reading help one grow as an individual and most importantly how does the habit of reading shapes up the future of a student?

Warren Buffet devotes 80% of his daily routine to reading. Some might say he is a fairly successful person. The habit of reading is what differentiates an average person from the extraordinary. Reading habit has a multi-layered effect on the life of a student. It widens the horizon giving a novel perspective to the reader and makes them capable of looking at the same thing from different viewpoints. It liberates the mind and educates one against being judgmental. A reader does not look at anything in black and white, rather looks at the grey area where many explanations of a single event are possible.

Here is a list of qualities that a voracious reader inculcates over a period of time:

1. Phenomenal vocabulary: Books contain brilliantly curated words that leaves one spellbound. A good reader can engage with other people by expressing his/her thoughts effortlessly. The next time you meet a person who uses difficult words, you might want to ask about the number of books he/she has read in the recent past.

2. Knowledge is power:  Books have such a motivating impact that they can empower even a physically weak person to the extent of making him the strongest person in the world. For instance, Mahatma Gandhi, it was not the physical strength but the mental strength that made him the Father of the Nation. Knowledge is an asset that cannot be stolen or taken away. It is reading that strengthens the mind to remain composed even under the adverse circumstances.

3. Career-oriented growth: Reading makes one more focused and coherent. It is all the more beneficial when you are reading something that can build your career. For example, if you want to be a public speaker, factual knowledge based on scientific data can help you come out with many useful arguments to support your viewpoint.

4. Memory workout: While reading a good book, it’s really easy to escape the real life and become absorbed in the events happening in the book. In some books, there is more than one narrative being told simultaneously and one needs to be proactive in memorizing the characters to understand the story. So, a good book is always an exercise of one’s brain.

Laurence Sterne has rightly said, “The desire for knowledge, like the thirst of riches, increases ever with the acquisition of it.” Picking up the right book can transform one’s life as our mind feed on the things we perceive. The perception, in turn, is created by what we read or hear.
