6 Interview Tips to impress your Potential Employer

You have landed your first interview, so congratulations. You have an updated resume, the time and day for the interview are set, and you are a bundle of nerves. Fear not, because we are here to help you get through the tricky process of acing an in-person interview. These tried and tested tips might be just the push you need. Remember, nothing good comes easy.

6 Interview Tips to impress your Potential Employer

  1. Punctuality is Important

First impressions are important. Arriving 5-10 minutes before the time given to you is a great way to show your potential employer that you value their time. Punctuality is a virtue that is highly coveted in employees. If you live far, make sure you plan your route ahead of time. It is always better to reach half an hour before the interview than half an hour after the interview.

  1. Dress for the Role

Your attire is more important than you think it is. That is what your interviewers will see the moment you walk into the room. If you dress in a jeans and t-shirt for an interview at an MNC, you are effectively saying that you don’t respect their work culture. The safest bet is to pick a formal outfit to come across as professional.

  1. Do Not Fidget

Your body language says a lot about your state of mind. Don’t play with your thumbs or your hair while answering questions. If you are someone who fidgets a lot, practice before your interview. Your posture and eye contact while answering questions should reflect confidence.

  1. Take a Pause

Most students ignore this piece of advice. But it is perfectly acceptable to take a pause before answering your questions. Take a few seconds to formulate your answer and then start speaking. Rambling on and on without any direction is the perfect way to bomb your interview.

  1. Be Prepared to Ask Questions

This is the golden rule for mastering an interview. Research the company beforehand. Be prepared to ask questions. Topics to research include their management style, the latest project the company is working on, or future plans for the company. An interview is not intended to be a one-way conversation.

  1. Thank You Note

Your interview is not over as soon as you walk out of that room. How you follow up with the interviewer is very important. Make it a point to send a thank you note or an email. This will make you stand out from the vast pool of candidates.

For students interviewing for their first job or internship, it is important to get acquainted with the basics of an in-person interview. This is your chance to showcase who you are and what your goals are. Above all, you should be in the right mindset while sitting down for an interview. If you really want the job, your interviewers will definitely be able to see it in the way you talk and answer their questions.

How to Develop a Self-Care Routine

While taking care of our responsibilities and commitments, we often forget to take care of ourselves. So what exactly is self-care? Self-care is when you take care of your own emotional, mental, physical and spiritual needs.  A proper self-care routine can help you stay fit physically, mentally and emotionally. For students who might be dealing with the stress of admissions, board exams, entrance exams and peer pressure, here are a few tips to take care of yourself.  You can follow either one or all of them.

How to Develop a Self-Care Routine

Quiet Time

Never underestimate the power of some quiet time. Whether it is five minutes or 10 minutes use this window to just sit with your own thoughts. You will be surprised at what you learn about yourself during that time. It is lovely to be surrounded by people you love all the time. But sometimes, your focus should only be you. This time is for yourself, and for you to acquaint yourself with the thoughts in your head.

Find a Hobby

Do not sit idle, especially during vacation time. Find a hobby you love. It could be drawing or it could be teaching underprivileged children. But do what makes you feel better from inside. Some people prefer keeping a written journal; some prefer keeping an art journal. And there are some who prefer to organize their books or clean their room.

Exercise Daily

Exercising is beneficial in more than one way. Apart from physical fitness, exercising regularly releases endorphins in your body. These hormones are responsible for making you feel happy. Find a gym buddy or exercise on your own with your favorite music. Even 30 minutes of exercise can have a profound impact on your body and mind. So don’t be lazy and get up from the sofa.

Find A Way To Release Your Thoughts

It’s the constantly circling thoughts in your head that might do you more harm than good. Find a way to get rid of these thoughts. You can talk to a therapist (there’s no shame in that) or you can talk to a close friend or family member. Sometimes, we need some sort of external help to make sense of and organize our thoughts.

Meditate Daily

Students are at an age where meditation seems boring. But this is another way to calm your mind. Even if you only sit down for a few minutes each day, meditation can help you focus better. Meditation can be a good way to clear your head before an exam or important interview.

Talk To People You Love

When we are worried, instead of talking to people we love, we shut them out. That is the worst thing you can do to yourself. Whenever you need to, pick up the phone and call a close friend. Do you study away from home? Call your parents or siblings and talk to them regularly. It is a guaranteed stress buster. The best thing to do is just call up your mom. She will always be willing to listen to everything you have to say.

Healthy Diet

Fries, burgers, shakes, and soda, sounds tempting right? As we all know, junk food is terrible for the body. But did you know that it is terrible for your soul as well? You see —all this makes you sluggish while slowing you down. Add veggies, fruits, pulses and other healthy food to your diet. In a couple of weeks, you will definitely see a change in yourself.

Release Your Anger

Don’t let your anger fester. Either talk to the person you are angry at or find a way to let go of it. Some people do not prefer confrontations. In that case, you can take up an activity that helps you get rid of these feelings. Boxing or running are good options. And maybe there is a place in your city where you can break stuff and release your anger, for a price of course.

Sleep Routine

A fixed time to go to sleep and a fixed time for waking up: sounds boring right? Students get very less sleep because they are either studying or on their gadgets late into the night. These late night excursions result in less sleep, which in turn has a negative effect on your entire day the next morning. Fixing the number of hours you sleep ensures that your body is well rested, which is important. If you are physically tired due to lack of sleep, it will affect everything activity you do that day.

Take A Vacation

You will realize this, as you grow a little older, that vacations are important. Even if you’re in school or college, take mini trips on the weekends with your parents or friends. This is the time you will get the opportunity to recharge and rejuvenate your mind. And if taking a vacation is not an option at the moment, there are other ways mentioned in this article to help you relax.

Write one Positive thing a day

Focus on the good things in your life. Take a few minutes each day to write one positive thing that happens that day. Keep all these little notes in a jar. Maybe a month or two later, when you are feeling particularly low, you can open up the jar and remind yourself of all the good things in your life. This is a good reminder of how lucky you are to be where you are right now. Don’t underestimate the power of positive actions in your life.

These self-care tips might sound simple. But once you start practicing them, they will have a large impact on your life. At times, it becomes important to look inwards and ask yourself, am I ok? And if you are not, it might be time to develop a self-care routine that works for you. Remember, it is ok to ask for help. It is ok to not be strong all the time, and it is perfectly fine when you need to take some time out for yourself.

Role of an Enriching Internship Experience

Gone are those days, when getting a lucrative job was a cake walk. All you needed was a degree and there were widespread jobs in front of you. Today due to extreme competition, employers are looking to hire people who are experienced and are ready to take a challenge. Nobody likes to hire somebody who needs to be spoon-fed and trained for a lengthy period of time. Therefore it is expected that when a fresher joins his first job, he is already well aware of the norms and ethics of the corporate sector and is trained enough to start delivering from the very first day of his joining.

This may sound very competitive but is indeed true. The big question is where to get this exposure even before your first job, and the answer to this question is very straight forward and that is internship and trainings, which a student is expected to undergo during the tenure of their course. Many undergraduate and post graduate courses have an essential 2-6 months training or internship as a part of the curriculum where a student is supposed to work in a formal setup in order to get some industrial exposure. Even if this isn’t compulsory, we’d advice everybody to opt for an internship while studying.

Following are many advantages of undertaking an internship:

 Are Internships Important

  1. Get a taste of the corporate world even before actually starting the journey, because stepping into the corporate sector can be very daunting. Life at college and life at work is polls apart. Little do we know about the culture and ethics of the workplace while having a happening college life? Hence, an internship is a great time to learn about body language, dressing style and also how to communicate.
  2. Rediscover yourself, your negatives as well as strengths. You might be the topper of your college but things are quite different when you actually step into a formal workplace. You will then get to know your true strengths and weaknesses. It is during your internship when your mistakes would not cost you as much and you can work on yourself.
  3. This is an opportunity to socialise and network. In today’s world when there is widespread competition, it is very important to showcase yourself. Therefore internship is the best time to showcase your strengths by socialising with people of stature and building links which would come handy while you apply for a full time job.
  4. Build a stepping stone to a flourishing career. If you work hard and prove it to the organisation that you have the required skills during your internship then you can definitely reserve a position for yourself in the organisation. On the other hand, a particular role might seem to be quite interesting, but when you actually get on to do it you might realise that its not your cup of tea. Hence internship can show you the real picture which will help you make a right decision.
  5. Make some money! There are several companies who are willing to pay a stipend during the course of internship to keep the motivation of the trainees high. So it’s a great way to motivate yourself along with some serious learning.

How is College Exam Preparation different from School?

College is that time in a person’s life, which is a right combination of hard work as well as fun. However many students become too relaxed and do not take studies and curriculum seriously as they did during their school time. However it’s the duty of the students to realise that these lectures are as important as the classes which they used to have in school.

College is that time when students can easily get distracted and not focus on studies.  Little do they realise that this carefree nature can cost them a lot during their final exams. Therefore it is advisable to balance their social life and academics wisely.

College curriculum is vast and is very important when it comes to career choices and if not taken seriously can pile up and can become a major problem if proper attention is not paid during the academic year. Following are few of the ways by which a student can ease the pressure and formulate a proper technique to come out with flying colours:

How is College Exam Preparation different from School

  • Attend Your Lectures Regularly- Attending lectures regularly goes without saying. It might sound very old fashioned and boring but the fact is that college professors are very knowledgeable and you can extract the most of their knowledge by attending their lectures and classes regularly. Hence, bunking classes should be avoided completely because even one missed lecture can be very costly. You will lose track of what was being taught in class and eventually become very uninterested in the subject altogether, which will affect your final score!
  • Complete Assignments On Timely Basis– If you get assignments, just like you used to get homework during your school time, then regard yourself lucky. Take those assignments seriously and make sure that your lecturers mark them because these assignments will make you revise what you studied in class, hence helping you master the concept.
  • Minor & Major Assessments– There are regular assessments which take place in college, these assessments may or may not be counted towards your final exam score but will definitely provide you an idea about your weak points and will also help you prepare for your final exam. These are your testing grounds, take them seriously.
  • Pay A Visit To The Library– Hanging out with friends, watching movies, shopping etc. is a very vital part of college life but make sure to take some time out and visit the library. It is wise to borrow important reference books ahead of time and take photocopy of important questions & concepts beforehand as during final exams, you might be too preoccupied.
  • Socialise With Seniors– It’s a great way to enjoy college life by befriending seniors, not only do they know all the hang outs but they also have all the experience about the exam pattern. If you share a good reputation with your seniors then you can also ask for the notes which they referred during their times. They can also guide you in the final year while finding placements.
  • Refer To Past Year Papers– The easiest way to gain confidence is to refer to past year exam papers, as this way you can derive some pattern of questions year after year. By refereeing to the past year exam papers you can manage your time and devote more time to topics from where the actual questions come from.
  • Take Midterm Exams Seriously– As mentioned earlier, it is wise to take your midterm exams seriously. This will not only help you prepare for half of the course but will also pin point areas of improvement. It acts as a reality check and provides you time to brush on topics which need more help.
  • Clarify Doubts With Your Lecturers– Once you get marked on your assessments and mid term exams, it’s wise to get back to your mistakes and clarify concepts which you got wrong and simultaneously practise those concepts which require attention.
  • Prepare Notes– College curriculum can be vast unlike your school curriculum where only a single text book will suffice. In case of college exams you would have to refer to multiple notes & reference books and prepare notes which are relevant to your curriculum. Therefore preparing notes it not only reduces your efforts but also provides everything at one place for your exams.
  • Keep Photocopies And Important References Handy For Last Minute Preparations-Like mentioned above, make sure to pile up and file all the photocopies and hand held notes in one file so that they are handy when required and can be easily referred to.
  • Group Studies Help- The best part about college exams is that you get ample time for preparations alongside. Therefore you can make use of group studies. If you happen to reside in a hostel with all your other classmate then it is even better to invest time in group studies, this not only increases your confidence but also you get to learn a lot from your peers’ mistake. It saves a lot of time and keeps you at pace with your class mates.
  • Understand The Pattern Of The Exam- Make sure to follow all the updates which are provided by the administration. Make sure that there is no change in the curriculum and also take note of the marking scheme. It is wise to keep track of all the reference material double check your exam dates and date sheet.
  • Build Confidence For Practical Exams– If there are practical exams, then it is vital to be very confident about the practical examinations. Remember to clear all important concepts with the teacher and also make sure that you have all the desired apparatus and stationary which would be required to perform the practical.

Preparation for college exams may be a little different from preparation for school exams, therefore it is wise to start your preparation well on time and do not leave any scope for last minute preparation as it can lead to stress and silly mistakes.
